Art has always accompanied humanity in its exploration of the world, and now it is venturing into outer space. Moon Gallery is the first extraterrestrial art gallery, carrying Earth’s culture beyond our planet.
From June 15 to 19, 2021, the “ISS Payload Gallery” exhibition took place at AIR Gallery (ITMO, St. Petersburg), organized by Moon Gallery Foundation in collaboration with the Art & Science Center of ITMO University. The exhibition featured more than 80 miniature art objects created by artists from around the world. These works were shortlisted for a mission that, in February 2022, traveled to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the NG-17 spacecraft.
These 1-cubic-centimeter miniatures embody ideas that are significant not only for our time but also for a future interplanetary society. They represent a fusion of art, science, and technology, rethinking humanity’s place in space.
The exhibition showcased works by renowned artists such as Marcus Neustetter, Renzo Pasquale, Lakshmi Mohanbabu, Andy Gracie, Eduardo Kac, and many others. The project presentation was led by Anna Sitnikova, Deputy Chairperson of Moon Gallery Foundation.
The exhibition concluded with a mini-conference and workshop, where scientists, engineers, and artists discussed the future of art in space. The project was supported by GLEX 2021 – Global Space Exploration Conference and ITACCUS (IAF) – the International Astronautical Federation’s Technical Activities Committee for the Cultural Utilization of Space.
This project marks a new stage in the perception of art, blurring the boundaries between Earth and the universe.
